Nexplanon
The contraceptive implant
What is it?
Nexplanon is a 4 cm (1.5 in) plastic tube that gets inserted under the skin of your upper arm. It then releases progestin, a type a progesterone like the one your body makes.
How does it work?
It works by stopping ovulation and making the cervical mucus too thick for sperm to pass through, from your vaginal canal into the uterus.
How effective is it?
Nexplanon is a highly effective (99.9%) in preventing a pregnancy.
Everything you need to know about Nexplanon
Before your implant insertion appointment:
1. You need a prescription (this will be provide to you by the doctor after the initial counselling)
2. You can book your implant insertion appointment anytime in your cycle
3. We want to make sure you are not pregnant by meeting one of the below criteria:
- 3 weeks of PROTECTED intercourse and a negative urine pregnancy test (done in our office)
- 10 days of PROTECTED intercourse and a negative pregnancy blood test (done at Dynalife and you will need a requisition from a doctor)
4. You can bring a friend for support.
5. Eat a light meal 30-60 min before your appointmen
6. Plan to be in our office for 30-45 min.
