About IUDs

An intrauterine device (IUD) is a small, soft T-shaped device with a nylon string attached, which is inserted into the uterus by a healthcare provider.

IUDS are among the most reliable and convenient forms of contraception for women of all ages, offering a 99.7% chance of preventing pregnancy for up to 5-10 years.

There are two types of IUDs available: hormonal and the non-hormonal copper IUD. We determine your IUD type based on your menstruation pattern and personal preference.

Beyond contraception

IUDs can help prevent heavy and irregular periods in women of all ages—from teens to breastfeeding mothers and women transitioning into menopause.

IUD insertion and risks

We strive to book non-urgent IUD insertion appointments within 1-3 weeks.

In preparation for your IUD insertion appointment:

1.     We recommend attending one of our IUD small group counselling sessions. These take place 1-2 times/month. To book a spot please sign-up using the form at the bottom of this page. There is no commitment to an IUD insertion by attending these sessions.

2. You will need a prescription ( this will be provided to you by our physician during the consultation/insertion visit).

3.     You can have your IUD insertion appointment anytime in your cycle.

4.     You want to make sure you are not pregnant by meeting ONE of the below criteria:

-       3 weeks of PROTECTED intercourse and a negative urine pregnancy test (done in our office).

-       10 days of PROTECTED intercourse and a negative pregnancy blood test (done at Dynalife and you will need a requisition from a physician).

The day of IUD insertion

  1. Review our short 2 minute IUD videos: above.

  2. Ensure you are not pregnant (see above criteria).

  3. Bring your health care card and medication coverage plan number.

  4. Take 400-600 mg Ibuprofen.

  5. You can bring a friend for support.

  6. Eat a light meal 30-60 min before your appointment

  7. Plan to be in our office for 30-45 min.

  8. Review our Mirena, Kyleena or copper IUD handouts.

What is considered PROTECTED intercourse?

Protected intercourse means no sex or using a RELIABLE method of contraception ( using condoms during the whole duration of intercourse, no missed birth control pills over the last month, vasectomy, tubal ligation). The pull-out method and calendar method are not considered reliable contraception and your IUD insertion appointment might be re-scheduled in order to protect your health.

For IUD removals

Abstain from sex for five days before your appointment, unless you are planning for a pregnancy.

For Emergency copper IUD insertions

Emergency IUD insertion needs to happen within 5-7 days from the day of your unprotected sex. Please send us an email as soon as possible after the unprotected intercourse so we can try and accommodate your appointment.
